In Everyman, knowledge plays a critical role in moving both the plot forward. After Death comes to Everyman and tells him of the journey he must take, Everyman was in need of help to venture on with this journey, " Alas, I may well weep with sighs deep: Now have I no manner of company To help me in my journey and me to keep." (p512 lines 184-186). Fellowship, Kindred and Cousin of whom Everyman thought he could call on and trust in to walk with him chose not to aid him in his journey.
Knowledge is introduced to the play as a relative of Good Deeds. "I have a sister that shall with you also, Called Knowledge, which shall with you abide to help you make that dreadful rekoning." (p520 lines 519-521) Knowledge puts Everyman on a path to where he is trying to get to and needs to go. This intentional by the author, obviously the characters in the play aren't just characeters but virtues, traits, aspects of life and religion that the author is trying to illistrate how they are used and can work in one's life i.e. walk with god.
Knowledge brings man to Confession, and through confession Good Deeds is free/ given a fresh start after being burried by previous sins. As the play moves forward Knowledge continues to play a key role in introducing new characters-five witts, beauty, discretion, etc... In the end Knowledge and Good Deeds remain of which Good Deeds descends with Everyman to the grave. This play is a play with a purpose to get people take a hold of their spirituality and get on the right path.
